Week 8

                                                             Elementary Science II

Week: October 14th - October 18st

1. What did you do in lab this week? /What was the big question?

My group's big research question was about the earth's origin. There are so many misconceptions about how the Earth was made, for example, the Earth was formed instantly. Historically people used to believe that the Earth was the center of the world. We learned that current science understands that Earth is 4.65 billion years old thanks to geology and fossil studies we were able to set a date for the Earth.

We also got to hear from other groups about the origin of the Universe, the lifecycles of stars, galaxies, Black holes, and exploration of space. One thing I learned about stars is that depending on the mass of a star, when it dies it either becomes a white dwarf or explodes in a supernova. There is only one picture of a black hole and we can only can tell by the light around it.

2.  What did you learn in Thursday's lecture?

In the lecture, the earth was not formed by the Big Bang. Earth started as a small dot that was created by a giant cloud of gas and dust. This then expanded to Earth as we know it now. It did NOT come from the Big Bang and appeared. The Earth's tilt was due to Theia, a protoplanet that hit Earth.

Fun Fact: There are more stars than there is sand on Earth.

Takeaway: Teach more about people who impacted science that isn't a typical white man. For example Jerrie Cobb and more!

3. Textbook

What did you learn? We learned that the moon does not rotate one side faces the Earth and has a thinner crust compared to the side that is not visible and has a thicker crust.

What was most helpful? The video that explained the Big Bang was helpful, by Khan Academy.

What do you need more information on? Nothing

4. What questions do you have?
Why do people believe that the Big Bang started everything?
