Week 10

                                                                  Elementary Science II

Week: October 28th - November 1st

What did you do in lab this week? /What was the big question?

We started lab by taking a formative assessment about rocks, the big question is what is a rock? Then we talked in our groups about assessments. We asked ourselves how do we assess students and what do there results tell us about their learning. This made us reflect a lot on our education and how will we change that for our future students. As we talked in class, we just learn something to get an A on a exam and move on. On paper it looks good but in reality you are not learning, challenging and engaging with the material. Then we moved on to doing a hand on activity where we would reenact the creation of different rocks. As you can see from the picture below we created 2 of each rock. sedimentary, igneous, and metamorphic. Sedimentary is created by compression, Igneous by melting then cooling and Metamorphic by heat and pressure.

What did you learn in Thursday's lecture?

The tree main topics we went over was earthquakes/volcanos. For me I learned more about the plate tectonics. Tectonics plated formed the earth as we see today. These large plates move slowly by forces and can turn into one of three boundaries. One Divergent is when the plates move apart from each other. Two Convergent which is when plates move towards each other and collide. Third is Transform which is where plates slide past each other horizontally. These boundaries make earthquakes, volcanics eruptions and mountains.

Answer questions about the weekly text books readings:

1. what did you learn? I didn't know that there were several tectonic plates that are as big as countries. Based off these boundaries the plates shift and cause more earthquakes and volcanos. For examples parts of California land of the boards of the boundaries which can explain why they have so much earthquakes.

2. What was most helpful? The videos and images. It also helps that the textbook goes along with what we are talking about in lab and lecture.

3. What do you need more information on? None

4. What questions do you have? There were a lot of terms in lecture which ones are the most important to know?
