Week 11

                                                                  Elementary Science II

Week 11: November 4th - November 8th

What did you do in lab this week? /What was the big question?

We started lab by talked about law of superposition, which is sedimentary rock layers that happen over time. The oldest layer is on the bottom and the younger is on top. Geologists use this to tell the age of the rock. Then we were able to look at sand from different places and determine how it was created.

Sand created by water is polished, smooth, and generally similar in size.

Sand created through glaciers is polished, smooth, but irregular in size.

Sand created through wind is opaque, frosted, pitted, and very fine grained.

All three of these are also forms of erosion.

What did you learn in Thursday's lecture?

I learned Iowa has a state rock which is Geode, when cut open has crystal like inside. We also got to have experiment different types of  pop in water and learn what is water displacement. I assumed that all pop cans would sink when put in water due to it's weight of the can. But in lecture we learn that amount of sugar in the pop affects weather it sinks or floats. Root Beer sank when it got in the water but diet coca cola didn't, it floated.

I also learned what water displacement is, which is a method used to measure the volume of an object based on the water that is displaced when the object goes in. The amount of water that goes up or pours out can tell us the volume of the object. I also learned from the story he was reading that no jewelry is made out of 100% gold it needs silver, if not it falls apart.

Answer questions about the weekly text books readings:

1. what did you learn? I learned that the cycle is never ending. Rocks can change forms multiple times and move from the original location but it is a ongoing process. The 4 key processes in the rock cycle is heat, pressure, weathering and erosion

2. What was most helpful? That the reading wasn't long and full of academic language. The textbook is straight to the point and easy to read and follow along.

3. What do you need more information on? None

4. What questions do you have? None
